File and Naming Convention
Best Practices
- Files should be named consistently
- File names should be short but descriptive
- Avoid special characters or spaces in a file name
- Use capitals and underscores instead of periods or spaces or slashes
- Use date format: YYYYMMDD
- Include a version number if applicable for mockup revisions (LL-hp-mockup-V1.)
- Write down naming convention in a data management plan
- Client initials-placement or description-details.extension ie: For Lyman Lures horizontal logo: LL-logo-horiz-white.png For Lyman Lures section blue gradient background: LL-bg-blue-grad.jpg
Elements to consider using in a naming convention are:
- Client abbreviation - ie Lyman Lures = LL
- Short Description: what is the asset - ie. mockup, background(bg), icon etc
- Detail: color, orientation, size if applicable. Ie. horizontal(horiz) stacked (stack), white, 440x300 etc
Digital Asset Naming Convention
Client Name (abbreviated)-description-details-version(if applicable ie for mockups).file extension. Here are some examples:
