File and Naming Convention

Best Practices

  1. Files should be named consistently
  2. File names should be short but descriptive
  3. Avoid special characters or spaces in a file name
  4. Use capitals and underscores instead of periods or spaces or slashes
  5. Use date format: YYYYMMDD
  6. Include a version number if applicable for mockup revisions (LL-hp-mockup-V1.)
  7. Write down naming convention in a data management plan
  8. Client initials-placement or description-details.extension ie: For Lyman Lures horizontal logo: LL-logo-horiz-white.png For Lyman Lures section blue gradient background: LL-bg-blue-grad.jpg

Elements to consider using in a naming convention are:

  1. Client abbreviation - ie Lyman Lures = LL
  2. Short Description: what is the asset - ie. mockup, background(bg), icon etc
  3. Detail: color, orientation, size if applicable. Ie. horizontal(horiz) stacked (stack), white, 440x300 etc

Digital Asset Naming Convention

Client Name (abbreviated)-description-details-version(if applicable ie for mockups).file extension. Here are some examples:

Lyman Lures homepage mockup: LL-mockup-hp-v1.jpg Lyman Lures section blue gradient background: LL-bg-blue-grad.jpg Lyman Lures logo horizontal version white: LL-logo-horiz-white.svg Icon: icon-star-yellow.svg icon-house-black.png Final mockup: LL-mockup-hp-final.psd
